DISCOVER

A journey to understand the people and forces that have shaped you | 2 weeks

Start Here

Discover is a deep dive into your past to explore the roots of who you are.

Looking back at your past is a necessary first step in discovering the people and forces that have shaped you so that you can answer the question “how did I get here?”.

For this module you will complete one exercise in three parts focusing on your childhood, adolescence and young adult years and the people and circumstances present from your earliest memories to adulthood.

It’s this time in your life that shaped your identity the most and taught you how to view yourself, relate to others and interact with the world around you.

Some of what you will encounter in this exercises will be hard. Know that pushing through will bring you the freedom that comes with knowing where you come from.

Also know that even though this can be hard you have what it takes to do hard things.

As you complete this module you will discover how some of the negative roots from your past are still driving the thoughts and behaviors by which you live your life now.

The goal is to write down some of these negative roots from your past still affecting you today. The next modules will show you how to overcome them.

Tips and directions…

  • As you complete this module you will likely encounter memories that are difficult or ones that you completely forgot about. You may find out some things about yourself that you don’t like. Things that are hard to look at. That’s okay! It’s why this is necessary.
  • It is important that you have an open mind to discover these things, because knowing them means you get to change them.
  • Cut yourself some slack and practice self-compassion.
  • Take the necessary time and space to reflect on the exercises and questions. Sometimes you need to let a question “breathe” and think it over before you can find the answer.
  • Practically it is very helpful to have someone to talk with as you complete the following exercises. Talking about your memories with someone else will help you gain some objectivity and it makes it easier when remembering the painful ones.
  • Need a friend? Join a Live Courageous group of men that are on a similar journey.
  • Follow the directions and complete as best you can.
  • Remember the goal for this module is to discover some of the negative roots that can be used for your growth. We don’t always like to focus on “the negative” but in this instance there are definitive roots we all have from our past and unearthing and focusing on them for a time is the only path to growth.
